Have you ever wondered that your chronic headache or migraine could have a dental cause?

1.Bad Bite: Bite is the way your upper and lower teeth fit together. A normal bite is wherein your upper teeth are slightly ahead of lower teeth and the tips of the molar teeth fit in the grooves of the opposite molars. Therefore a bad bite is wherein upper and lower teeth do not fit together as they should.A bad bite could be due to missing teeth, loose teeth or misaligned teeth. It causes intense pressure on jaw muscles. This is because a person with bad bite will unconsciously move his lower jaw in such way so as to have a good bite. This action repeated over and over again would lead to intense pressure on the jaw muscles leading to headache and migraine. Hence it is advisable to get the bite corrected by replacing or aligning the teeth.

2.Teeth grinding or clenching or bruxism: This is caused by stress or misaligned teeth. Due to excessive, repeated grinding of teeth, the muscles of the face and head are overworked leading to headache. Teeth grinding may happen at night while in sleep or during any kind of work. A person could grind his teeth unknowingly even during the day to day routine activities. Your dentist can help you out to correct bruxism.

3.TMJ disorders (Temporo Mandibular Joint): TMJ or the Temporo Mandibular Joint is the joint where lower jaw fits into the skull bone. The joint’s main function is to move the lower jaw in 3 directions ie side to side, forward and backwards. Any disorders of this joint could lead to tension of the head muscles thereby causing headaches or migraine.

4.Tooth aches:Toothaches due to cavities in the teeth or any gum issues could cause headache or migraine. This is due to pain referring or radiating to the head.

Talk to your dentist if you have been having chronic headaches or migraine to see if there are any oral causes or your headache.
